Who Told You That Was Normal?

How Trauma, Culture & Pressure Shape the Choices We Make

Program Theme: Trauma, culture, belonging, consent, accountability, intervention, and resilience.

In this compelling and thought-provoking workshop, Rashan Legard uses his personal journey from childhood through college, military service, and adulthood to explore a powerful question: Who told you that was normal? Through vulnerable storytelling and guided reflection, Rashan examines how family, peers, athletics, institutions, and culture can shape our understanding of belonging, relationships, masculinity, consent, safety, and acceptable behavior.

Drawing from his lived experiences with childhood sexual abuse, grooming, peer pressure, harmful locker room culture, military sexual trauma, and institutional failure, Rashan demonstrates how behaviors and beliefs that initially seem normal can have lasting consequences. Participants are challenged to examine how trauma, the desire to belong, social pressure, and silence can influence the choices we make, and how those choices can affect both ourselves and others.

The workshop moves beyond awareness to accountability, prevention, and action. Participants learn to recognize warning signs, question harmful norms, understand the importance of consent and boundaries, support someone who discloses harm, intervene when something feels wrong, and connect others with appropriate resources. Rashan also shares his journey of resilience to demonstrate that trauma does not have to determine how a person's story ends.

Who Told You That Was Normal? challenges participants to examine what they have been taught to accept, what they may have normalized, and what they now have the power to change. The program encourages students and campus communities to create cultures where people listen, believe, speak up, respect boundaries, support survivors, and look out for one another.
